Stellingwarfs

Stellingwarfs is a variety of Dutch Low Saxon spoken in Ooststellingwerf and Weststellingwerf in the Dutch province of Friesland, and also in Steenwijkerland in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is largely mutually intelligible with Dutch.

Stellingwarfs first appeared in writing in the Frisian Almanac in 1840. A few writers published literature in the language during the 19th century, and some Stellingwarfs prose, poetry and plays were written during the 20th century.

In the 1970s a Stellingwarfs magazine, De Ovend, and classes for adults were set up, and a Stellingwarfs-Dutch dictionary was published in 2004. Church services are sometimes held in Stellingwarfs, and there are some weekly radio programmes and newspaper features in the language.

Stellingwarfs was officially recognised by the Netherlands government in 1996 as part of Low Saxonian.

There once was a wren who had made his nest in a garage. He lived there with his family. One day he and his mate went out to look for some food to bring their chicks, leaving the young birds all alone.
