Warao is a language isolate spoken by about 27,000 people mainly in the northeast Venezuela, and also in northern parts of Guyana, Suriname and Brazil. In Venezuela it is spoken along the Orinoco river delta in the south of Delta Amacuro State, in the north of Monagas State and in the south of Sucre State. In Warao villages, the majority of people are monolingual in Warao, however Warao people living in cities are more likely to speak Spanish as well or instead of Warao.
Warao is also known as Guarauno, Guarao or Warrau. Dialects include Kokuina, Hoanarao, Arawao and Wasay. The name Warao means "boat people" or "people on boats", and the Warao were traditionally nomadic and generally lived along rivers. It is thought that they have been living in some of the areas where they are for around 9,000 years, or possibly a lot longer.
Warao was first documented and written by Basili María de Barral, a missionary from Galicia in Spain, starting in the 1950s. He published a dictionary of Warao, collections of Warao stories, history, etc., and translations of religious works. Warao is written with the Latin alphabet, and is taught in some schools in Delta Amacuro State in Venezuela. However, traditionally it is an oral language.
