Jabo is member of the Southern Grebo group of Kru languages. It is spoken in Grand Kru and Maryland counties in the southeast of Liberia. According to Ethnologue, Jabo is a dialect of Southern Grebo, which had 99,000 speakers in Liberia in 2015, and 71,000 speakers in Côte d'Ivoire / Ivory Coast in 2017. In the past Jabo was known as Gweabo.
Jabo was studied and documented by the linguists Edward Sapir and George Herzog, who collect oral literature such as proverbs and sayings, and also studied the Jabo drum-signalling system.
