Wejewa is a member of the Sumba-Flores branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 65,000 people in the west of Sumba Island in East Nusa Tenggara Province in southeastern Indonesia. In particular, it is spoken in the villages of Mata Pyawu, Weelimbudaramane, Weelimma and Tematana in the Southwest Sumba Regency.
Wejewa is also known as Veveva, Waidjewa, Wajewa, West Sumbanese, Wewewa, Wewjewa or Weyewa. Dialects include Weyewa, Lauli and Tana Righu.
Wejewa was first written in the 1930s by a Dr. Onvlee, who produced some schools books and translations of biblical texts. A translation of the New Testament of the Bible was published in 1970.
