Yamba is a member of the Eastern Grassfields group of the Southern Bantoid languages. It is spoken by about 80,000 people in the southwest of southern Cameroon and eastern Nigeria. In particular, it is spoken in the Nwa Sub-Division in the Donga-Mantung Department in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, and in Mbem, a village in Eastern Region of Nigeria.
Yamba is also known as Bebaroe, Boenga Ko, Kakayamba, Mbem, Mbubem, Muzok, and Swe’nga. Dialects include Gom, Mfe, Nkot, Ntong, Kwak, Mbem, Ngung, Bom, Sih, Nwa, Ntim, Gamfe, Rom, Gwembe, Saam, Fam, and Yang.
The General Alphabet for Cameroon Languages was adopted in 1979, and Yamba is written with a version of that alphabet. The Mbem dialects is used as the basis for written Yamba. There is a dictionary and some radio programmes in the language.
