Gulf Arabic is a variety of Arabic spoken by about 10.6 million people mainly around the Persian Gulf in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Egypt, Saudi Arabic, Oman, Qatar, Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Yemen, and also in Canada and the USA.
There are about 3.7 million speakers of Gulf Arabic in the UAE. In Kuwait there are about 2.3 million Gulf Arabic speakers, particularly in the Al Jahra' governorate, and Gulf Arabic is the de facto national working language. There are also about 1.6 million speakers in Egypt, 962,000 in Saudi Arabia, 788,000 in Oman and the same number in Qatar, and smaller numbers of speakers in other countries.
Gulf Arabic is also known as Gulf Spoken Arabic, Qatari, Emirati Arabic, Khaleeji or خليجي (ḵalījī). There are two main varieties of Gulf Arabic: badawī (Bedouin) and ḥadarī (sedentary).
