Hejazi Arabic (Ḥijāzi / حجازي)

Hejazi Arabic is a variety of Arabic spoken mainly in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia, particularly in 'Asir, Bahah, Jizan, Madinah, Makkah and Tabuk provinces. There are two main groups of Hejazi Arabic dialects: those spoken in cities such as Jeddah, Mecca and Medina, and those spoken by people from rural areas who live in cities, and by bedouin people.

There are about 10.3 million speakers of Hejazi Arabic in Saudi Arabia. It is also spoken in the UAE, Qatar, Eritrea and the USA.

Hejazi Arabic is also known as Hejazi, Hijazi Arabic, Hejazi Spoken Arabic, West Arabian Arabic or West Arabian Colloquial Arabic.

There is no standard way to write Hejazi Arabic. It is generally written in the same way as Classical Arabic with some modifications.

پ and ڤ are only used in loanwords and foreign names and some speakers pronounce [b] and [f] respectively.

الثورة العربية الكبرىٰ هيا ثورة مسلحه لقوات عربية ضد الدولة العثمانية، بدايتها كانت في الحجاز، لمن طلق الشريف حسين بن علي أول طلقة من بندقيته، كان هادا قابل فجر يوم ٩ شعبان سنة ١٣٣٤ ه الموافق ١٠ يونيو ١٩١٦ م في مكة المكرمة. وكان لهادي الطلقة صدىٰ كبير في جده والطايف والمدينة.

Transliteration

Aṯ-ṯawra al-ʕarabiya al-Kubrā hiyā ṯawra musallaḥa liguwwāt ʕarabiya ḍid ad-dawla al-ʕuṯmāniya, bidāythā kānat fī il-Ḥijāz, lmman ṭalag Aš-Šarīf Ḥussayn bin ʕalī awwal ṭalga min bundugiyatu, kān hādā gabil fajur yom 9 Šaʕbān 1443 al-muwāfig 10 Yonyo 1916 m fī Makka al-mukarrama. Wukān lihadī aṭ-ṭalga ṣadā kabīr fī Jidda wa aṭ-Ṭayif wa al-Madīna.

Translation

The Great Arab Revolt is an armed revolution of Arab forces against the Ottoman Empire, its beginning was in the Hijaz, for whom Sharif Hussein bin Ali fired the first shot of his rifle, this was met at dawn on the 9th of Sha’ban 1334 AH corresponding to June 10, 1916 AD in Makkah Al-Mukarramah. This shot had a great echo in Jeddah, Taif and Medina.
