Banggai

Banggai is a member of the Celebic group of Malayo-Polynesian languages. It is spoken by about 130,000 people in the Banggai Archipelago Regency (Kabupaten Banggai Kepulauan) in the Province of Central Sulawesi in central Indonesia. The majority of Banggai speakers are adults over 30 years old. Younger Banggai people are more likely to speak Indonesian.

The language was formerly known as Aki, which means 'no' in Banggai. The name Banggai comes from the Moluccan Malay word gai (maggot, grub), or from the Bajau word bagai (outsider). There are two main dialects of Banggai: East Banggai and West Banggai, which are mutually intelligible.

Banggai is written with the Latin script, and was first documented in the mid-19th century. There is a Banggai translation of The Bible, and a Banggai-Indonesian dictionary, and Banggai songs are played on local radio stations.
