Brao is a member of the Bahnaric branch of the Austroasiatic language family. It is spoken in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam by about 35,400 people. In 2015 there were about 26,000 speakers of Brao in Attapeu and Champasak provinces Laos. In 2009 there were about 9,000 Brao speakers in Veaeng district of Ratanakiri province of Cambodia, and there were about 400 speakers of Brao in on Tum province of Vietnam.
Brao is also known as Braou, Brau, Brou, Lave, Laveh, Love, Proue or Rawe. There are several varieties of Brao, including Lave, or Brao proper, Kru'ng (Kreung) and Kavet (Kravet). Some linguists consider them separate languages.
