Isthmus Mixe is a member of the Mixe branch of the Mixe-Zoque language family. It is spoken by about 22,500 people in the villages of Coatlán San José el Paraíso, Mazatlán, Guichicovi and Camotlán in the municipality of San Juan Guichicovi on the Tehuantepec isthmus in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
Isthmus Mixe is also known Lowland Mixe, Eastern Mixe, Guichicovi Mixe, Mixe del Istmo, Mixe medio del este or Ayuk. Native speakers call it Ayüük, hagunaax or hayuuc.
Isthmus Mixe is written with the Latin alphabet, and there appear to be several different spelling systems. About 10% of Isthmus Mixe speakers are literate in their language. There is a translation of the New Testament in Isthmus Mixe.
