Kosraean is a Micronesian language spoken mainly in the State of Kosrae (Kusaie), part of the Caroline Islands in the Federated States of Micronesia. In 2005 there were about 6,620 speakers of Kosraean in Micronesia, and another 1,100 speakers elsewhere. The language is also known as Kusaiean.
Kosraean is a statutory provincial language in the State of Kosrae. English is also used, and older Kosraeans speak Japanese.
Kosraean was first written with a version of the Latin alphabet in 1975 in Kee-dong Lee's Kusaiean Reference Grammar (PDF). Lee also published a Kusaiean-English Dictionary (PDF) in 1976. An standard spelling system for Kosraen has been used since 1977.
