Pohnpeian (Lokaiahn Pohnpei)

Pohnpeian is a Micronesian language spoken by about 32,500 people mainly in Micronesia. There are about 24,000 speakers of Pohnpeian on Pohnpei, which is part of the Caroline Islands, and part of Pohnpei State, one of the four states in the Federated States of Micronesia. There are about 3,700 speakers of Pohnpeian in other parts of Miconesia, and about 3,500 in the USA.

Pohnpeian is also known as Ponapean or Pohnpei. Native names of the language are Lokaiahn Pohnpei and Mahsen en Pohnpei: the latter is honorific.

Pohnpeian is written with the Latin alphabet using an orthography developed by German missionaries. The Bible has been translated into Pohnpeian, and there is a grammar and a dictionary of the language.
