Lacandon (Jach-t’aan)

Lacandon is a member of the Yucatecan branch of the Mayan language family. It is spoken in the northeast of the state of Chiapas in southern Mexico. In 2015 there were about 600 speakers of Lacandon, out of a population of 1,000 Lacandon people.

Lacandon is also known as Lacandón or Lakantún, and the native name is Jach-t’aan [xatʃ tʼaːn] ("true language").

There are a number of ways to write Lacandon, including one devised by the Instituto Nacional de Lenguas Indígenas (National Indigenous Languages Institute / INALI).
