Mising is a member of the Eastern Tani branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken by about 630,000 people mainly in Assam, and also in Arunachal Pradesh, in the northeast of India. In Assam it is spoken in the Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat and Tinsukia districts, and Mising speakers can be found in the East Siang district, Lower Dibang Valley and Lohit districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
Mising is also known as Mishing, Mising-Padam-Minyong, Miri or Plains Miri. It is spoken by the Mising, Padam and Minyong people. Dialects include Oyan, Pagro, Delu, Sayang Dambug, Somuwa, Moying and Samuguria. The name Mising means "man of the soil". The name Miri comes from the Miri Hills, where the Mising people are believed to come from originally.
Mising is written with the Latin script using an orthography developed by the Mising Agom Kébang (MAK) or Mising Language Society, an organisation founded in 1972 which aims to preserve and develop the Mising language. MAK has produced books, periodicals and other publications in Mising, and they persuaded the government of Assam to introduce Mising in primary schools in Mising villages in 1985. Other ways to write Mising were developed by missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries.
