Nishi (Nyishi / न्यिसि)

Nishi is a member of the Western Tani branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken by about 280,000 people in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in northeastern India. In particular, it is spoken in the Papum Pare, Lower Subansiri, Kurung Kumey, Kra Daadi, East Kameng, Pakke Kesang and Kamle districts of Arunachal Pradesh, and in the Darrang District of Assam.

Nishi is also known as Nyishi, Nisi, Nishang, Nissi, Nyising, Leil, Aya, Akang, Bangni-Bangru or Solung. Dialects include Akang, Aya, Nyishi (raga), Mishing, Tagin, Bangni-Bangru and Solung. They are all mutually intelligible, with the exceptions of Bangni-Bangru and Solung. The name Nyishi means "highland man" and comes from nyi (man) and shi (highland)
