Nengone (p’ene nengone)

Nengone is a member of the New Caledonian branch of Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 8,720 people mainly on Maré and Tiga islands, which are part Loyalty Islands Province in New Caledonia. There are also speakers of Nengone in the South Province in the south of Nouméa Island.

The language is also known as Iwatenu, Mare, Marean, Nengonese or P’ene Nengone. There are three registers of Nengone: Pene Animac, which is used in everyday conversation with family and friends, P’ene Iwateno, which is used on formal occasions, and P’ene Egesho, which is used to show contempt and in conflicts.

Nengone is written with the Latin alphabet, although there is no standard spelling system. It is taught in schools and colleges. There is a dictionary, grammar and a translation of the Bible in Nengone.
