Nùng is a member of the Central Tai group of Tai-Kadai / Kra-Dai languages. It is spoken by about 968,800 people, mainly in northeastern Vietnam, particularly in the provinces of Cao Bằng and Lạng Sơn in the Northeast Region, and also in Dak Lak, Gia Lai and Lam Dong Provinces in the South Central Region. There are also speakers of Nùng in Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in the southeast of Yunnan Province in the south of China, and in Luang Prabang province in northern Laos.
Nùng is also known as Nong, Tai Nùng, Tay or Tày Nùng. The Nùng people are descendants of Zhuang people who migrated to Vietnam from southern China between the 16th and 18th centuries. In Laos they are known as the Yang people.
Dialects of Nùng include: Nùng Phạn Slinh, Nùng Cháo, Nùng Inh, Nùng An and Nùng Giang. They are mostly spoken in northern Vietnam, with the exception of the Nùng Phạn Slinh dialect, is spoken in central and southern Vietnam as well.
A way to write Nùng with the Latin alphabet was developed in the 1960s. Since then it has been revised somewhat.
