It is spoken by about 540,000 people in southwestern China, particularly in the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in the southwest of Yunnan Province, and in Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan province.
There are also about 102,000 speakers of Tai Nuea in Kachin and Shan states in northern Myanmar, 70,000 speakers in Sơn La Province in the northwest of Vietnam, and 14,100 speakers in Bolikhamxai, Houaphan, Viengchan, Xiengkhoang, and Xaisomboun provinces of Laos.
Other names for Tai Nuea include Tai Nüa, Tai Le, Tai Mau, Tai Kong, Tai Na, Dehong Dai, Chinese Shan, Chinese Tai and Tai Dehong. Native speakers call the language ᥖᥭᥰ ᥖᥬᥲ ᥑᥨᥒᥰ [tai˥ taɯ˧˩ xoŋ˥], and themselves ᥖᥭᥰ ᥘᥫ [tai˥lə˧]
Tai Nuea has its own alphabet known as the Dehong Dai script or Tai Le script, which is thought to have developed from the Burmese script.
