Southwestern Tepehuán belongs to the Piman branch of the Uto-Aztecan language family. It is spoken by about 22,000 people in the south of Durango State in central Mexico. In particular it is spoken in the community of Santa María Magdalena Taxicaringa in municipality of Mezquital, and in the communities of Bernardino Milipillas Chico and San Francisco de Laja in Pueblo Neuvo municipality.
Southwestern Tepehuán is closely related to Southeastern Tepehuán and to Northern Tepehuán.
