Xong is a Hmong-Mien language spoken in southern China by about 900,000 people, mainly in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (湘西土家族苗族自治州) and in the city of Huaihua (怀化市) in Hunan Province (湖南省), and also in Guizhou (贵州省), Hubei (湖北省) provinces, in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (广西壮族自治区), and in Chongqing municipality (重庆).
Xong is also known as Eastern Miao, Meo, Red Miao, Xiangxi Miao or North Hmongic. In Chinese it is known as 湘西苗语 (xiāngxīmiáozú - Western Hunan Miao) or 东部苗语 (dōngbùmiáoyǔ - Eastern Miao). Native speakers call it Dut Xonb [tu˥˧ ɕõ˧˥]. There are two groups of Xong dialects: Western and Eastern. The Western dialects are the most widely spoken, with 800,000 speakers, and are considered 'Xong proper'.
A standard way to write Xong with the Latin alphabet was officially adopted in 1956. It is based on the Western dialect spoken in Làyǐpíng (腊乙坪) village and Jíwèi (吉卫) town in Huāyuán county in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.
