Nhangu is part of the Yolŋu Matha branch of the Pama-Nyungan language family. It is spoken by the Yan-nhaŋu people in the Crocodile Islands off the coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia, mainly in the Maningrida and Milingimbi communities. In 2012 there were 20 speakers of Nhangu, all of whom were older adults.
The language is also known as Nhaŋu, Nangu, Yanangu, Jarnango or Yan-nhaŋu. Varieties of Nhangu include Gamalaŋga, Gorryindi, Mäḻarra, Bindarra, Ngurruwulu and Walamangu
The Yan-nhaŋu Language Team, consisting of Laurie Baymarrwangga, a monoglot native speaker, Bentley James, an anthropologist and linguist, and a number of other linguists and native speakers was set up in 1994 to docment and revitalise the language. The first Yan-nhaŋu dictionary was published in 2003, and the Yan-nhaŋu Atlas and Illustrated Dictionary of the Crocodile Islands was published in 2014.
