Awara is a member of the Finisterre branch of Trans–New Guinea languages spoken in Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea by about 1,900. Awara speakers live mainly in 14 villages in the Markham district south of the Finisterre mountain range. It is closely related to Wantoat.
