Hamtai is a member of the Southeast Angan group of Trans-New-Guinea languages. It is spoken by about 45,000 people in Morobe and Gulf provinces in Papua New Guinea.
Hamtai is also known as Hamday, Kapau, Kamea or Watut. Dialects include Wenta, Howi, Pmasa'a, Hamtai proper and Kaintiba. A way to write it with the Latin script was devised in 2009.
