Barai is a member of the Koiarian branch of the Trans-New Guinea language spoken in Oro (Northern) and Central Provinces of Papua New Guinea. Barai speakers are found mainly in Afore and Birarie districts of Oro Province, and in Rigo district of Central Province. In 2003 there were about 800 Barai speakers.
Barai has two dialects: Birarie and Muguani, and is related to Ese.
