Fordata (vaidida)

Fordata is a member of the Central-Eastern branch of Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 50,000 people in the province of Maluku in eastern Indonesia, mainly in the north of the Tanimbar archipelago on the islands of Fordata, Larat, Lutur, Nuswotar, Labobar, Teneman, Seira, Molo and Maru, and on the west coast of Yamdena Island.

Fordata is also known as vaidida, vai Fordata or vai Tnebar. It is written with the Latin alphabet, and was first documented by missionaries in the late 19th century.

Fordata-speaking parents tend to speak to their children in Fordata and Ambonese Malay. The children grow up speaking both languages, although tend to be more proficient in Malay and Indonesian, which are the main languages used in schools, official contexts and church activities. Fordata is however taught as a subject in some schools.
