Ogan (Base Ugan / بهاس اوڬن)

Ogan is a member of the Central Malay branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 500,000 people along the Ogan River in the provinces of South Sumatra and Lampung in eastern Indonesia. In South Sumatra Province it is spoken particularly in the Ogan Komering Ulu Regency, and also in Ogan Ilir Regency, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, and East Ogan Komering Ulu Regency. In Lampung Province it is spoken mainly in the Way Kanan and North Lampung regencies, and also in the regencies of West Lampung, South Lampung, Metro City and East Lampung.

There are two main dialects Ogan: Ulu (Hulu) and Ulak (Ilir). The Ulu dialect is spoken along the upper part of the Ogan River, while the Ulak dialect is spoken along the lower part of the Ogan River. The dialects are more or less mutually intelligible.

There are ways to write Ogam with the Latin and Arabic scripts. There is also an Ogan script (Aksare Ugan), which is related to the Lampung script, and is used by only a few people.
