Mamasa is a member of the South Sulawesi branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 100,000 people along the Mamasa River in Mamasa Regency in the south of West Sulawesi Province in central Indonesia.
There are three dialects of Mamasa: Northern Mamasa, Central Mamasa and Pattae' (Basa Pattae' / Mattula' Pattae). Speakers of Pattae' consider themselves culturally distinct from other Mamasa speakers, and think of Pattae' as a separate language.
Mamasa can be written with the Latin alphabet.
