Kokborok is a member of the Brahmaputran branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken by about 1 million people, mainly in the state of Tripura in the north east of India, and also in Assam. There are also about 320,000 speakers of Kokborok in the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions of Bangladesh along the border with India.
Kokborok is also known as Tiprakok or Tripurikok. It has been an official language in Tripura since 1979, and has been taught and used as a medium of instruction in primary and secondary schools since the 1980s. There are also courses in Kokborok at Tripura University.
The earliest known writing in Kokborok dates from the 1st century AD, and was written in an alphabet known as Koloma. From 1897 Kokborok was written with the Bengali alphabet in the Kingdom of Tipra. Kokborok is now generaly written with the Latin alphabet. It also has its own script, known as the Aima, Koloma or Kokborok script which was invented recently, and is based on the ancient Koloma script.
