Bishnupriya Manipuri (বিষ্ণুপ্রিয়া মণিপুরী ঠার)

Bishnupriya Manipuri is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly in the northeast of India and Bangladesh by about 120,000 people. In 2011 there were about 79,600 speakers of Bishnupriya Manipuri in India, mainly in the Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts of Assam state, and in the north of Tripura state. In 2003 there were about 40,000 Bishnupriya Manipuri speakers in Bangladesh, mainly in the Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj districts of the Sylhet division. There are also some speakers of Bishnupriya Manipuri in Myanmar / Burma.

In India Bishnupriya Manipuri is taught in primary schools and used in literature and the media. It is written with the Bengali script, and used to be written with the Devanagari alphabet. It is also known as Bishnupria Manipuri, Manipuri Bishnupriya, Bishnupriya, Bishnupriya Manipuri, Bisna Puriya or BPM. Native speakers call it Imār Thār (ইমার ঠার - "Language of my Mother") or Manipuri (মণিপুরী).
