Bhumij (भूमिज / ଭୂମିଜ / ভূমিজ )

Bhumij is a member of the North Munda branch of the Austroasiatic language famuily. It is spoken by about 120,000 poeple, mainly in the states of West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand in the northeast of India. In particular, Bhumij people can be found in the East Singhbhum and Saraikela Kharsawan districts of Jharkhand; the Purulia, Bankura, Midnapore and 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal; and the Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Balasore districts of Odisha. These areas are collective known as the Kherwarian area.

Bhumij is related to Ho, Mundari and Santali. It is usually written with the Devanagari, Odia or Bengali alphabets. It is also written the Ol Onal alphabet, which was invented between 1981-1992 by Ol Guru Mahendra Nath Sardar, a Bhumij linguist from Odisha.

Transliteration

Joto hoṛoko ke mān ār ôdhikār reyā pāīṭī re jônmôjug āte nôwārī oḍoô bārābārī nām ākānā. Ājke buddhi oḍoô ôntôr ātmā āte nām ākānā oḍoô soṅgere ājke dādā bhāī rūpte māntī dôrkār.

Translation

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
