There are also about 476,000 speakers of Rangpuri in the northeast of India, mainly in the Darjeeling, Koch Bihar, Jalpaiguri and Uttar Dinajpur districts of West Bengal state, and in the Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts of Assam state.

In Bangladesh it is known as Rangpuri, Kamtapuri, Rajbongshi or Polia. In India it is known as Koch-Rajbongshi or Goalpariya in Assam, and as Surjapuri or Rajbanshi in Bihar.

In Bangladesh Rangpuri is written with the Bengali alphabet and is used in literature and on the radio. In India it is written with the Devanagari alphabet, although relatively few people are able to read and write it.
