North Marquesan (Te èo ènana)

North Marquesan is an Eastern Polynesian language spoken in the Marquesas Islands (Te Henua ènana) in French Polynesia by about 5,390 people. In particular it is spoken on the islands of Eiao, Hatutu, Matu One, Motuiti, Nuku Hiva, Ua Huka and Ua Pou. Each island has its own local variety of the language. The dialect of Ua Huka combines elements from North Marquesan and South Marquesan.

North Marquesan is closely related to South Marquesan, which is spoken in the southern Marquesas Islands, and quite closely related to Mangareva, Rarotonga and Hawaiian.

North Marquesan is taught in primary schools and used on the radio. It is written with the Latin alphabet.
