South Marquesan (Te èo ènata)

South Marquesan is an Eastern Polynesian language spoken in the Marquesas Islands (Te Fenua ènata) in French Polynesia by about 2,700 people. In particular it is spoken on the islands of Fatu Hiva, Fatu Huka, Hiva Oa, Mohotani and Tahuta. Each island has its own local variety of the language.

South Marquesan is closely related to North Marquesan, which is spoken in the northern Marquesas Islands, and quite closely related to Mangareva, Rarotonga and Hawaiian.

South Marquesan is taught in primary schools and used on the radio. It is written with the Latin alphabet.
