Vaeakau-Taumako

Vaeakau-Taumako is a Polynesian language spoken in Temotu province in the Solomon Islands, mainly in the Duff and Reef Islands, such as Nifiloli, Taumako, Matema, Makalumu, Nupani, Nukapu, Tinakula and Pileni. There are also speakers on Santa Cruz Island, and in the White River area near Honiara. Different dalects of Vaeakau-Taumako are spoken on each island. In 2011 there were about 1,660 speakers of Vaeakau-Taumako, which was formerly known as Pileni or Pilheni.

Vaeakau-Taumako is the everyday language of the people who speak it, and is passed on in families. However, education and media are in English and Solomon Islands Pijin, and these languages, plus Vaeakau-Taumako, are used in churches.
