Anuak is a member of the Western Nilotic branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family. It is spoken by about 220,000 people in the west of Ethiopia and in the east of South Sudan, particularly along the Baro River and in the city of Gambela (ጋምቤላ) in the Gambela Region of Ethiopia, and is the Akobo and Pochalla districts of Jonglei State in South Sudan. There is also Anuak speakers in the USA, specifically in Minnesota, and in Canada, where they emigrated due to inter-ethnic conflict in Ethiopia in the 1990s and 2000s.
Anuak is also known as Anyuak, Anywa, Anywaa, Yambo, Jambo, Yembo, Bar, Burjin, Miroy, Moojanga or Nuro. Anuak speakers call their language Dha-Anywaa and themselves Anywaa. Dialects include Adoyo, Koro, Lule and Openo. It is closely related to Päri and Jur-Luwo, which are spoken in South Sudan.
There are several ways to write Anuak with the Latin alphabet. The Bible Society of Sudan in Khartoum published a Anuak translation of the New Testament of the Bible in 1976 using a version of the Latin alphabet based on the International African Alphabet (L'alphabet international africain / AIA). A different version of the Latin alphabet is used in primary schools in Ethiopia, and the Ethiopic script is used elsewhere in Ethiopia. A way to write Anuak with the Arabic script has also been devised.
Anuak has tones: a high tone, a mid tone, a low tone and a rising tone, however they do not appear to be indicated in writing.
