Lango is a member of the Southern Luo branch of the Nilotic language family. It is spoken by about 2.1 million people in the Northern Region of Uganda, mainly north of Lake Kyoga in the Lango sub-region, and particularly in the districts of Abim, Alebtong, Amolatar, Apac, Dokolo, Kole, Lira, Otuke and Oyam.
Lango is also known as Langi, Leb Laŋo, Leb Lango, Leb-Lango, Lwo, Lwoo, Lëblaŋo or leb Lano. It is closely related to, and mutually intelligible with Luo (Dholuo) and Acholi, which are spoken in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and South Sudan.
A way to write Lango with the Latin alphabet was introduced in 1967. This was revised in 2010. The language is taught in primary schools, and used in newspapers, on the radio and in some literature, including a translation of the Bible that was published in 1979.
