Gonja is a member of the North Guang branch of the Kwa language family. It is spoken in the Brong-Ahafo and Northern regions of northern Ghana. In 2013 there were about 310,000 speakers of Gonja.
Gonja is used to some extent in schools, and the language has official recognition.
Gonja has originally written with a version of the Arabic script. During the 20th century the Latin alphabet came to be used in a number of versions. The current alphabet was reviewed by the Gonja Orthographic Commitee in Tamale in 2014.
