Aja (Adja)

Aja is a member of the Gbe branch of Volta-Niger language family. It is spoken in the south west of Benin and in the south east of Togo, specifically in the departments of Couffo, Mono and Zou in Benin, in the Plateaux and Maritime regions of Togo. In 2012 there were about 550,000 Aja speakers: 360,000 in Benin, and 190,000 in Togo. The language is also known as Ajagbe, Aja-Gbe, Hwegbe or Hwè.

Aja has been taught in schools in Benin since 2013. It is also used in newspapers and on the radio.

Agbetɔwo pleŋu vanɔ gbɛmɛ ko vovoɖeka gbeswɛgbeswɛ, sɔto amɛnyinyi ko acɛwo gomɛ; wo xɔnɔ susunywin ko jimɛnywi so esexwe. Wo ɖo a wɛ nɔvi ɖaɖa wowo nɔnɔwo gbɔ.
