Gun (Gungbe)

Gun is a member of the Eastern Gbe branch of Volta-Niger language family. It is spoken by the Ogu people mainly in Benin, and also in Nigeria. In particular, it is spoken in the cities of Porto-Novo, Sèmè-Kpodji, Bonou, Adjarra, Avrankou, Dangbo, Akpro-Missérété and Cotonou in Ouémé and Littoral departments in the southeast of Benin, and in the cities of Badagry in Lagos State, and Mawun and Tube in Ogun State in the southwest of Nigeria.

Gun is known as gungbe by the people who speak it. An orthography for Gun using the Latin alphabet was developed in Benin for a Bible translation in 1923. This was updated in 1975. Another orthography has been developed in Nigeria. There are proposals to unify the to orthographies, including one devised by Hounkpati Capo in 1990.
