Ebira is a member of the Nupoid branch of the Volta-Niger language family. It is spoken by about 2.2 million people mainly in the Kogi Central senatorial district of Kogi State in the North Central region of Nigeria, and also in in the states of Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, Benue, Edo and Ondo, and in the Federal Capital Territory.
Ebira is also known as Igbira, Okene or Egbura. Dialects include Ebira-Okene, Ebira-Koto and Ẹtụnọ. A way to write Ebria with the Latin alphabet was introduced in 1976 and is based on the Ebira-Okene dialect. There is an Ebria translation of Bible.
