Ikwerre

Ikwerre is a member of the Igboid branch of the Volta-Niger language family. It is spoken by about 200,000 people mainly in Rivers State in southern Nigeria, in particular in the Emuoha, Ikwerre, Obio-Akpor, and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas(LGAs). There are also speakers of Ikwerre in the Ohaji-Egbema LGA of Imo State.

This language is also known as as Ikwere, Ikwerri or Ìwhnuruòhnà. Dialects include Apani, Akpo-Mgbu-Tolu, Ogbakiri, Emowhua, Ndele, Elele, Omerelu, Egbedna, Aluu, Igwuruta, Ibaa, Isiokpo, Omagwna, Ubima, Ipo, Omudioga, Obio, Rumuji and Omuanwa.

Ikwerre has been written with the Latin script since the 1980s. It is used in literature and the media.
