The Kodava Lipi was developed in 1970 by a Dr. Iychettira M Muthanna, a writer, scholar and translator from Kodagu in Karnataka State in the southwest of India. It is used to write Kodava, a Dravidian language spoken in Karnataka, and was chosen as the official script for Kodava in 2022 by the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy, a government body in Karnataka which represents Kodava-speaking communities.
Kodava Lipi was used in signage and online classes from April 2023, and is now taught in schools, and used in official documents. Various other scripts have been used to write Kodava, including the Kannada, Malayalam, Latin and Coorgi-Cox alphabets.
Kodava Lipi means 'Kodava Script', and is also known as the Muthanna Script.
