Kurukh Banna    Kurukh Banna

The Kurukh Banna alphabet was devised by Basudev Ram Khalkho from Odisha in India, who spent 28 years working on it, and released it in 1991. It is used to write Kurukh, a Dravidian language spoken by the Oraon Tribal Community mainly in northern India, and also in Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. It is also known as Kurux Banna.

In Sundargarh district of Odisha the Kurukh Banna alphabet is taught and promoted by Kurukh Parha, a traditional institution of Oraon tribal community. A font has been developed and people are using it widely in books, magazines and other material. The alphabet is also used by Oraon people in the Indian states of Chhattisgarh, Bengal, Jharkhand and Assam.
