Achagua (Achawa)

Achagua is a Northern Arawakan language spoken in the Meta and Casanare departments in central Colombia. Achuagua speakers live along the Upper Meta River between Puerto López and Puerto Gaitán in Umapo, and in the El Turpial reservation. It belongs to the Piapoko branch of the Arawakan language family, and is closely related to Piapoco. In the year 2000 there were about 250 speakers of Achagua, which is also known as Achawa, Ajagua, Xagua, Axagua, Achugua or Ajaga.
