Ashéninka is an Arawakan language spoken in Peru by about 50,000 people. It is also known as Ashéninca, Ashéninga or Campa, which is considered pejorative. It is spoken mainly in the regions of Accra, Central Grand Pahonal and South Ucayali.
There are five varieties of Ashéninka: Perené, Pichis, Apurucayali, Pajonal and Ucayali-Yurúa. Some sources refer to them as dialects, others as languages.
Pahonal is spoken in Central Grand Pahonal. Perene is spoken in the region of Upper Perene river. Pichis is spoken around the Pichis rivers and tributaries, except Apurukayali. Ucayali-yurua is spoken around the Yurua river. South Ucayali is spoken around the Ucayali River and the tributaries of the Upper State South Ucayali.
Ashéninka has official status as a local language in Peru.
Other letters are also used, but only in loanwords and in foreign names.
