Wapishana (Wapixana)

Wapishana is a Northern Arawakan language spoken in Guyana and Brazil by about 12,500 people. There are about 6,500 speakers of Wapishana in the state of Roraima in northern Brazil, particularly in the municipalities of Cantá and Bonfim. There are another 6,000 Wapishana speakers in Guyana in the regions of East Berbice-Corentyne and Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo.

Wapishana is also known as Uapixana, Vapidiana, Wapichan, Wapichana, Wapisana, Wapishshiana, Wapisiana, Wapitxana or Wapixana. It is related to Atorada, Atorai and Mapidian, and has borrowed vocabulary from Pemon, a Cariban language spoken in Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana.
