Yine is a Southern Arawakan language spoken by about 4,000 Amuesha people in eastern and southern Peru, particularly in the departments of Ucayali and Cusco. There may also be speakers of Yine, or closely related languages, in the Brazilian state of Acre and in northern Bolivia. It belongs to the Piro group of Southern Arawakan languages and is the main language within that group.
Yine is also known as Contaquiro, Pira, Piro, Pirro, Simiranch, or Simirinche. It is written with the Latin alphabet and is taught alongside Spanish in some schools. There are several spelling systems for Yine: the standard orthography is shown below.
