Indus Kohistani is a member of the Dardic branch of the Indo-Aryan language family. It is spoken in Kohistan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in northwest Pakistan along the west bank of the Indus river and in the Duber and Kandia Valleys. In 1992 there were about 200,000 speakers.
Indus Kohistani is also known as Abasin Kohistani. or Kōstāĩ, and formerly as Maiyã or Shuthun. There are two dialects: Kohistan, which is spoken along the Indus river in Jijal, Mani, Pattan and Seo, and Kanyawali, which is spoken in the Duber and Kandia Valleys. The name Kohistan means "the Land of Mountains". It is written with a version of the Arabic alphabet.
