Lop is a member of the Karluk branch of the Turkic language family. It is spoken by about 25,000 people in the Lop Nur region in the southeast of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the northwest of China. The Lop Nur region includes Lopnor County, and parts of Charqiliq and Bügür counties, and is part of the Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture. The majority of Lop speakers are over 50 years old. Younger people speak standard Uyghur and Mandarin Chinese.
Lop is also known as Lopnor or Lopnur. It is considered a dialect of Uyghur by some linguists, while others classify it as a closely related but separate language. It is also related to Uzbek. There are ways to write it with the Latin and Arabic scripts.
