Hindko is a member of Northwestern Lahnda branch of the Indo-Aryan language family. It is spoken by about 3.57 million people in the northwest of Pakistan, particularly in the Muzaffarabad district of Azad Kashmir Province, and in the Abbotabad and Mansehra districts of the Hazara Division of Khyber Pakhtunkwa Province. Hindko is referred to as a group of Lahnda dialects or as a separate language.
Hindko is also known as Northern Hindko, Hazara Hindko, Kagani, Kaghan or Hindki, and people who speak it are known as Hindki, Hindkun or Hindkowan. Hindko is written with the Arabic script using a spelling system based on Punjabi created by Rehmat Aziz Chitrali at the Khowar Academy in Chitral. It is used in literature and the media.
Another variety of Hindko: Southern Hindko, is spoken by about 1.17 million people in the Kohat and Peshawar districts of Khyber Pakhtunkwa province, and in the Attock and Hazara districts of Punjab province.
There are different literary standards for Northern Hindko and Southern Hindko. The former is based of the Abbottabad dialect, while the latter is based on the Peshawari dialect.
